Hello, blog readers and art appreciators! The unusual "brown winter" of 2011-12 is progressing towards February in the Hudson Valley, with no snow on the ground and little foliage on the trees. But my memories hark back to our magnificent fall, when the forests were aglow with gold, like the foliage in this painting. I am Ellen Perantoni, painter of the landscape in a manner inspired by the Hudson River School. I am strongly influenced by the works of such 19th century masters as Thomas Cole and Frederick Church. This painting is an upstream view of the western Catskill Mountains at the height of the fall foliage season.

This oil painting on stretched canvas is 16x20". It is currently in my studio. Unframed, the price is $1650. I do museum quality framing, in traditional wide gold frames or mahogany or walnut, according to the collector's choice. I will consider a payment plan or a fair offer from a sincere collector.

Anchorage on the Hudson at Saugerties

The painting at right is a view of the Hudson River Shoreline at Saugerties, about 100 miles north of New York City on the west side of the river. A small boat rests quietly at anchor, in the shade on a tranquil summer day. This painting is on a 11x14" stretched canvas, and is in my studio and now available for $700. (plus the cost of framing, if you wish). I do museum quality framing of my traditional paintings, mostly in wide traditional style frames. A bronzed gold would be great for this one.

If you would like to view my art in my studio, I will be happy to show it by appointment. The studio is a few minutes from NYS Thruway Exit 20, within 2 hours of the NYC metro area and a few hours from most points in New England, NJ and eastern PA.

Tranquillity at Esopus Bend

Hello, all you art lovers and blog readers! I apologize for neglecting this blog for a while, but I am back, with a painting of a beautiful local trout stream, the Esopus Creek, at a memorable spot at a memorable time of day.

This painting is on 11x14" canvas in a complementary 4" wide tarnished gold frame which I believe offsets the sunset glow nicely. On the wall th painting measures about 21x24". It is on exhibit at Green (Gallery) at 92 Partition St., Saugerties, NY. Green is open every day except Tuesday and Wednesday, from 10-5.

Path Through the Grazing Lands

I love landscape art with delicacy and power, mystery and crisp realism. I live and paint in the Hudson Valley of New York State and I created this blog in 2007. The painting at right is a path to what I know is a blissful destination. The light creates marvelous colors in the areas of brightness and shadow among the foliage at foreground.

Valley View from the Niche, and My Open Studio August 13-14, 2011:

Hello everyone --art lovers, blog readers, Hudson River School aficionados and all! This is Ellen Perantoni again with a 20x24" painting I just completed, using a recent smaller work as a study. This shows a view of a meandering river from one of the dramatic escarpments with which geological history has blessed this beautiful region.
The curved rocks and lacy foliage of early summer frame a view that invites contemplation as well as intuitions (I think) of a spiritual world beyond the visible.
This is what I strive for in my art-- some artists may use abstract forms to suggest the material, but I prefer to realistically portray the beauty of our world in a manner that hints at even greater beauty that is unseen but can only be felt with the heart.

This painting is on 20x24" stretched canvas. I have found an extraordinary antique gold leaf frame for it. The frame is leafed in 22k or 24k gold (I'm not sure which) and I am delighted with the way it brings out the golden tones of the painting. The frame is 4-1/2" wide, bringing the framed painting to almost 29x33" on the wall.
I am getting ready for the town wide Saugerties Art Tour August 13-14, 10-6 both Saturday and Sunday. August is a fabulous time to visit the Hudson Valley. And if you come that weekend you can visit the studios of 41 artists and artisans who work in the riverfront township of Saugerties. My studio is in a forest in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains between Saugerties and Woodstock, and other studios in other parts of the township overlook the Hudson River.
Free maps to the studios are available, in color and easy to follow. You can drop in at my studio or any of the 41 without an appointment and browse for as short or long a time as you wish. I will be showing some of the paintings on this blog, as well as other paintings, studies and signed prints that have never been exhibited anywhere.

The Long Horizontal View: Catskills and Hudson Valley

Hello all! This is Ellen Perantoni, painter of the landscape in oil in a manner inspired by the Hudson River School and the slightly later Barbizon School of the nineteenth century. To me this lovingly detailed sensitive capturing of the landscape "as is" is satisfying in a way not other art can match. I want, as the expression goes, to "have it all": the feathery quality of lacy foliage, the softness of clouds, the knife edges of the Catskill bluestone rock formations.

The two paintings pictured at right are both 12x24" oils on canvas. I am growing more and more fond of this horizontal format, so right for landscape and so reminiscent of some of the most appealing 19th century Hudson River School art.
The first painting is a perspective on the high peaks of the northern Catskills of Greene County (home of Thomas Cole) from one high mountain peak, looking across to other high peaks and the tawny valleys between.
The second painting shows the Hudson Valley from a high field overlooking the upper river from the east, showing the river gently cupped in the rolling landscape.
Each of these works is priced (as shown, without framing) at $1650. I also do museum quality framing in wide traditional gold frames (as in my previous blog post) or simpler frames.
I would be happy to show you the works in my studio by appointment; some of the works in this blog are on consignment in art galleries and some have been sold, but the two in this post are available. Sunset on Still Water

The painting at right is another in the "long horizontal format" that I find elegant and have become increasingly fond of. You can feel the stillness in your soul of the gilded water that seems to have stilled its very ripplings in hushed air.
It is framed in a museum quality heavy hardwood frame, a work of art in itself. The painting comes to about 21x33" on the wall and the frame is almost 3" deep. The stretched canvas is 12x24". As framed it is priced $1950. and we are presently enjoying it in our home. But I love so many and most will be sold, so I will consider a payment plan/fair offer from a sincere collector.

Sunset After Thundershower

Hello, art loving friends and blog readers! This is my latest work in the "wide format" shape I've become fond of. I live and paint here in the Hudson Valley, where this kind of beauty is still blessedly commonplace...though that is is too modest a term for such spectacular beauty. This work is still drying in my studio. Now that winter is on the wane (that's what the calendar says, anyway) I look forward to these mountains being clothed in lush foliage as in this view.

2011 Summer and Fall Landscape Workshops Forming:

Hello, landscape art lovers and blog readers! This is Ellen Perantoni, painter of the landscape in oil, with another post which I hope you'll enjoy reading on a winter's morning (or any time that suits). I paint the landscape in oil in a manner inspired by the Hudson River School and I'm listed in AskArt. I have met many lovely people though this blog, people who have purchased my art, visited an open studio event or just sent friendly communications about painting. Also painters and beginners who would like to enter upon the absorbing study of this style of painting (which I feel is often sorely neglected).
When I paint, I want it all!
Meaning I am not satisfied with "washes" suggesting nature's miracles; I want to see and "feel" the laciness of leaves, the tumble of water in streams, the slow majestic progression of featherlight towers of cloud across the sky. Such tribute to the fineness of nature's textures is what I aim for in my art and what I work to teach, when I teach others.
I live and paint in the mid-Hudson Valley of New York State, where the original Hudson River School master painters worked in the mid 1800s. I paint where Cole and Church painted, and in little known beauty spots I have delightfully discovered for myself in the 25 plus years I have lived in this region.
This is about 2 hrs. north of the NYC metro area and within a few hours of most points in New England, NJ and eastern PA.
I'm now taking registrations for three 3-day workshops in 2011: June 3-5, July 8-10 and October 7-9 (my fall color workshop!).
I am limiting each workshop to 4 participants ; I do not aim to make a financial killing but to give close personal attention to each student. I feel I in turn benefit from working with others.

Night on the Rivers

Hello all, and I hope you are having a great holiday season! This is Ellen Perantoni, painter of the landscape in oil in a manner inspired by the Hudson River School and the slightly later Barbizon School. The season finds me home by my studio in the mid-Hudson Valley of New York State, where the pre-eminent American school of art that became known as the Hudson River School began. I still feel thrilled to be able to view and paint many of the same scenes immortalized by Hudson River School masters like Frederick Church and Jasper Cropsey, and to make my own discoveries of new and beautiful places to paint. The painting at right is entitled "Night on the Rivers" and was inspired by views of the mid-Hudson Valley. Night scenes are a growing passion of mine, and I am fascinated by their spare elegance and their power to evoke emotion. FAQ: How Long Did It Take to Paint That?

Hi! It's Ellen Perantoni, painter of the landscape in oil in a manner inspired by the Hudson River School, posting in response to recurring questions I get about the process of my art.
The question "How long did it take to paint that?, or, "How long does it take to paint something like that?" are questions I frequently hear. From students, experienced and sophisticated collectors, and all kinds of viewers of art. I hope you will enjoy this blog post. I won't kid you: the best answer I can give is not a number. I do not go to my easel to paint at a given time of day, break for lunch, etc, then start again, etc.etc. I could paint that way if I had to schedule my time; many artists do and perhaps there are some artists who might not paint enough if there was no time when they "have to" paint.
That is not me. If I had a 8-5 job I could schedule painting hours between 7:30-10 or some such, but painting is my only job I paint when the compulsion is on me, which is a lot of the time!.
About how long do I spend on a particular painting? When someone asks that, I hope the person is not trying to "value" the painting by number of hours I spent on it, and in most cases I can't even hazard a guess as to the number of hours or days.
This is why: I do most paintings in a series of shortish sessions. How short? Maybe 2-2/1/2 hours, to start. This applies whether I start the painting en plein air (on the spot, in the open air) or in the studio. If I am painting outdoors, the light generally changes within 2 hours or so and the scene doesn't look the same after 2 hours. Or even less time. I make a record of the scene by photographing it when I start, to show where the shadows are, etc.
Then I let the painting dry while I study it and plan my next step. How long does the next step take? Who knows? The sessions tend to be short for the simple reason that I reach a point where I prefer to let the work dry before I proceed further.
My process of stopping to let a landscape painting dry periodically before proceeding further means, in effect, that I do not keep track of time. I suppose some of my paintings (some but by no means all of even the small ones) take less than 10 sessions until I'm satisfied. But even some small ones take longer than that. When I do larger paintings, the sessions can stretch for months or, occasionally, over a year.
I work on more than one painting at a time, usually several.
Keeping track of time? I find that the most irrelevant, and least fun, thing I could be doing when I paint.
I work on a piece until I am satisfied enough to sign it and show it to the world. (In the case of a commission, I submit periodic photos to the client and he/she makes the final decision as to when he/she is satisfied).
A lot of the time I become satisfied a painting is "done" in a few weeks or a couple of months of short sessions. Sometimes it takes much longer. I have a few paintings I started over a year ago that I'm still not satisfied with. Sometimes in the case of such a painting I realize "what it needs" belatedly and then I am able to finish it in a way I'm happy with. Some paintings are never finished to my satisfaction, and I don't exhibit those no matter how much time I've spent on them.
I don't say I'm a perfectionist because I have sold many paintings and none of them has been perfect. Perfection may not be achievable in this world. But I have to feel good, to feel pleased with my work.
The painting at right took me an incalculable number of sessions, an incalculable number of hours. Its progress was somewhat unusual; the cloud formations in the sky took form relatively quickly, but in the painting's early stages I was not happy at all with the foreground. So I worked, and I worked, and I revised, and I revised. I was well over a year ago that I started this 16x20" painting, and rather recently I became pleased enough to show it.
As I worked on this painting it acquired numerous thin layers of paint and "glazes" which added depth and an almost 3-D effect. I generally paint in a series of glazes, but this work is among the most glazed (I won't use the work thickest because the glazes are very thin layers and the surface is not bumpy). It is glossy.
This painting is entitled "Revelations in the Sky" and is priced $2200. as framed, in a museum quality carved wood frame that brings it to about 21x25" on the wall.
I price my art, including this painting, according to how it looks regardless of how much time (which I don't keep track of) I spent on it.

Early Morning View from Margarite

Hello, fellow art lovers and blog readers! It's Ellen Perantoni, painter of the landscape in oil in a manner inspired by the great Hudson River School painters of the nineteenth century. As many of you know, those immortals did not confine themselves to Hudson Valley locations. Albert Bierstadt is best known for his sweeping Rocky Mountain panoramas and Thomas Moran for his scenes of the great plains. Frederick Church roamed the world in search of beauty to paint, and his locales extended to South America and the Middle East.
I did this plein air work on a recent trip to Sedona, AZ, to view its spectacular "red rock" formations. We stayed at a house that commanded amazing views and this is one of them, which I painted very early in the morning so as best to capture the delicate fresh colors of the early sky.
This painting, "Early Morning View from Margarite". is on 8x10" stretched canvas framed as shown in a museum quality carved wood frame, which brings it to almost 14x16" on the wall. It is currently in my studio and priced $575. I would consider a payment plan/fair offer from a sincere collector.

Pathway Through Fields, December

Hello friends, collectors and readers! I'm posting another painting image, playing catch-up because I was traveling (and painting) for a good part of October. I'm a painter of the landscape in oil, in a manner inspired by the great Hudson River School of art. The sparkling winter of the rural Hudson Valley will soon be here, and the painting at right pays homage to the season. Atmosphere is paramount in my landscapes. In this one I strove to capture what I call "winter mist", a misty atmosphere that seems to carry a breath of ice crystals with a bit of sunlight (or moonlight) filtering through. When you view this painting you feel a great stillness; you might imagine you can hear the faint crackle of an icicle or two falling from the trees.
Because of the many delicate layers of glazes used in this painting, the internet photo does not fully convey its depth and delicacy of color. I think the actual painting looks better than this dot-matrix digital photo.
This work, "Pathway Through Fields, December" is on 12x16" stretched canvas, framed in a museum quality wide gold traditional frame that brings the work to almost 20x24" on the wall.
This work is on exhibit at Green (Gallery) at 92 Partition St., Saugerties, NY, near New York State Thruway Exit 20. Green is open Thursday through Monday from 10-5 and sometimes on Tuesday and Wed.; telephone 845-418-3270.

Autumn,Alcove Reservoir (and more about Plein Air Painting:)

Hello friends and art lovers! This is Ellen Perantoni, painter of the landscape in oil, with a recent work celebrating the sunset over the peaceful Alcove Reservoir. The reservoir is in southwest Albany County New York, between Albany and the western Catskill Mountains. Artistically , this is Hudson River School country, and I live and paint about 45 miles from this reservoir.
About the only thing I enjoy more than driving through this region on a crisp fall day is stopping to paint or photograph some wonderful spot.
Here the state road bisects the reservoir and affords drivers this lovely view.
In order to capture this sunset, I needed more time than the sunset afforded. As you see when watching the sunset (if you remain conscious of time)a sunset sky like this lasts only minutes, maybe 15 minutes at most, until the cloud formations change and the sky darkens. The colors of the land darken too until all you see is a uniformly dark land mass in the foreground.
As I devote a great deal of time and care to the details of my paintings to come up with the most beautiful images possible, it's usually necessary for me to finish a sunset painting in my studio.
My aim at this point is to enhance the raw beauty until it becomes a polished gem.
This work, "Autumn, Alcove Reservoir" is on 11x14" stretched canvas. I plan to frame it in a museum quality traditional gold frame in a style favored by the Hudson River School painters of the 1900s. Framed, it will be priced in the $875. range. I would consider a payment plan/fair offer from a sincere collector.

River Perspective, and about landscape painting:

Hello, all! This is Ellen Perantoni with another painting image, and today I want to answer some questions I often hear about landscape painting. Such as, whether my paintings show an actual place as the camera would record it, whether I paint from photos, whether I paint on site, and how I change the way things look (if I do).

If I see a great view and I can paint it from an accessible spot big enough to set up my easel, I'll paint it there (en plein air, as the French impressionists put it, which means in the open air.) In the case of the painting at right, the viewpoint is in the middle of the river, only visible from a boat;
also, as the light is sunset light, it was changing too fast to do a painting on the spot or even get a good start; you can see that in less than an hour the sun will have sunk below the horizon and the scene will be dark.
So, in this case, I had to draw on my memory of the sunset, and I was aided by the huge number of sunset photos I've taken which I have in my archives.
Imagination and creativity play the main roles in the way I paint, even though the scenes are realistic--scenes that do exist in a certain place at a certain point in time...
The painting at right is entitled "River Perspective" and it's on a 12x24" stretched canvas. I've framed it in a heavy gold museum quality traditional frame. This work has been sold to a collector.
I live and paint in the town of Saugerties, a Hudson riverfront town that borders Woodstock on the west. I'm about a half mile from the Saugerties-Woodstock border. Hello, all of you who love landscape paintings, especially paintings reminiscent of the Hudson River School. Happy summer, art lovers and blog readers! This is Ellen Perantoni, Hudson Valley resident and painter of the local landscape in a manner inspired by the Hudson River School tradition. I paint in a studio in the Catskills between the towns of Woodstock and Saugerties, and am preparing for a studio tour/sale in August with paintings like this one at right. Saugerties is right on the Hudson River and is marked by the Saugerties Lighthouse; there is a most romantic half mile path along the shoreline to reach the Lighthouse, which sits on its own tiny island out in the water.
Walking the path one morning when the tide was low, I was captivated by the view to my left and the way it appeared in the pinkish, pearly light and the way it tinted the clouds. So I painted this painting (I often carry my materials with me in case of just such a happy occurrence.)
This painting is on 8x10" stretched canvas. I have framed it in it a wide handsome gold frame which brings it to almost 14x16" on the wall. As framed it is priced at $575. I would consider a payment plan/fair offer from a sincere collector.

The painting at right is entitled "Cliffsides by the Water", inspired by the majestic mountains by our still New England lakes. The season is early fall and the greens of summer have brightened into the fall foliage colors for which we are famous. Even the clouds are tinted by the warm tones on this sparkling afternoon. A bit of hazy gray cloud meanders across the background, reminding us one charm of our weather is that it is changeable.

Diffused Radiance, at Night

Hi, I'm Ellen Perantoni, landscape artist, and this is one of my recent paintings. I have grown more and more enamored of the magical night scenes here in the Hudson Valley of New York State, where I live and paint. I'm fascinated by the way the moon rises as a golden coin, and then as it mounts in the sky it becomes more silvery and remote. Ever find time to watch this? I don't' often find the time either, but I have seen it and can't forget it. The light effects as it hides behind clouds and mist simply take my breath away. My art is mainly inspired by the masters of the Hudson River School who painted in this region ion the 19th century. I study the lives and works of such immortals as Frederick Church, Thomas Cole and Sanford Gifford.

Tranquil Water by the Shore

Hello, art lovers and blog readers! I am Ellen Perantoni, and I paint the landscape in oil in a manner inspired by the Hudson River School and the Barbizon School. I live and paint in the mid-Hudson Valley, and I frequent and paint many of the same beautiful sites first memorialized by Cole, Church and the other 19th century immortals in this field. I recently was privileged to visit the 19th century Hudson River School exhibit "Remember the Ladies" at the nearby Thomas Cole Historic Site in Catskill, NY, where Hudson River School Thomas Cole lived and painted. The site has a number of paintings by the immortal Thomas Cole, as well as a current exhibit of paintings by women who painted in the Hudson School manner back in the 19th century, such as Eliza Greatorex. From such original masterworks I learn and derive much of my inspiration

The four seasons of our beautiful region are a constant inspiration to the landscape painter. Peaceful Valley View

I live and paint in the Hudson Valley of New York State, amid the same beautiful views first memorialized by the nineteenth century masters such as Thomas Cole, Frederick Church, George Inness et al. The beauty of this region intoxicates and thrills me. Fortunately it has not been developed to the point where the magnificent vistas of the river and in the nearby mountains have been lost.

The painting at right is entitled "Peaceful Valley View" and is a sunset view looking west.
Please Note: This photo appears a bit grainy due to a bit of glare from the varnish; the actual painting is not grainy. The digital photo does not capture the subtlety of the art work: the foliage areas that appear blackish in the photo are a dark green with bronze glints from the late day light. The sky at the top is not as blue in the actual painting, more a soft grayish-purplish blue, and the foliage behind the large tree at right is muted and not as green as this photo makes it appear. The colors blend in a mellow and harmonious manner.
This oil on stretched canvas is 16x20", and I will frame it in a museum quality massive traditional gold frame. The framed size on the wall will probably be about 24x28". Or you can choose your own frame if you wish.

The image at right shows one of the many quiet, picturesque inlets on the east bank of the Hudson as sunset approaches late on a summer's day. There is a feeling of timelessness about the scene.
The painting is framed in a museum quality heavy hardwood frame that brings the paintings to about 11-1/2 by 13-1/2 inches on the wall. The painting on stretched canvas is 5x7". It has been sold to a collector, but I usually have a number of paintings this size in this style frame (though they sell quickly) and they look nice displayed in pairs or groups.

Kaaterskill Falls, August

I live and paint in the mid-Hudson Valley of New York State, only a brief spectacular drive from Kaaterskill Falls among the high peaks of the Catskill Mountains. This wonderful view was made world famous in the art of 19th century master Thomas Cole, and now I have painted it too. This view of the falls with its magnificent jumble of rock is typical of early August, when the trees have just started to turn gold-bronze and a bit of mist veils the top. In former days, the Catskill Mountain House hotel commanded a meadow beyond the top of these falls.
This painting is on 16x20" stretched canvas and is still drying in my studio. I frame it in a museum quality wide traditional gold frame which will considerably enhance its presence on the wall, or I'll frame it as the purchaser chooses. It will probably be consigned to one of the art galleries that represent me and will be priced in the $2400. range. I will consider a payment plan/fair offer from a sincere collector.

Bend in the Esopus

This painting has been sold to a collector. It shows a bend in the scenic trout fishing stream the Esopus Creek, that winds its way down from the western Catskill Mountains to eventually flow into the Hudson River at Saugerties. This view is from the rail bed of the Catskill Mountain Railroad, which overlooks this spot between Mt. Tremper and Phoenicia. I have seen this view at many times of day and times of year, and I captured this view at sunset in high summer looking west.
This painting is 16x20" on stretched canvas, and it's framed in a massive traditional museum quality gold frame that I feel sets it off well. Although this painting is sold I post new paintings here regularly, and I hope you will continue to read these blog posts and also to click on "Older Posts" at the bottom of this blog page. Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountain sunsets are among my favorite subjects.

A Brief Artist Statement/Bio...

Hello, art lovers and blog readers! This is Ellen Perantoni, painter of the landscape in oil in a manner inspired by the Hudson River School and the Barbizon School. I have lived in the Hudson Valley for decades, from my birthplace in New York City as far north as Albany. I now live and paint in a secluded studio on the slopes of Overlook Mountain, between Saugerties and Woodstock in the mid-Hudson Valley. I can be reached at eperantoni@yahoo.com
The painting at right shows detail from a view of Kaaterskill Clove in the northern Catskills. I will exhibit this work (subject to prior sale) at a show November 29 at the Woodstock Jewish Congregation, 1682 Glasco Tpk., Woodstick, NY from 10am-4pm.
I have a BA from New York University and have professionally produced creative work in many fields, from writing to composing music to fashion design. But painting is the best! My true love.
I studied oil painting with Hong-Nian Zhang, perhaps the pre-eminent living Woodstock painter, at the Woodstock School of Art. Hic color theory stands immortal in my mind.
I cherish all the nuances of the Hudson Valley landscape and have focused more and more on the Hudson River School and the Barbizon School for inspiration. My goal is to paint "better than photorealism", showing all the beautiful details and with a depth no photo can match, especially not digital ones on the Internet!
I am listed in AskArt, the major directory of respected living (and deceased) US artists. My work is in the permanent collection of Whistler House Museum of Art, along with work by J. McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent. I also have paintings in respected private collections including that of former NYS Governor George Pataki, a fellow Hudson Valley resident.
For the past several years I have focused on the dramatic and changeable Hudson Valley skies and their cloud formations. Recently I've been widening this focus to include more detailed treatment of the graceful foliage of the region.
I strive to paint clouds that look fluffy, leaves that look feathery, rocks that look eternal, and water that is still and silvery or turbulent, as the case may be.
Naturally I interpret, but I want to interpret so the reality looks even better, and the paintings draw you into the scenes and make you want to stay.

Here is another of my recent Hudson Valley panoramas, still drying in the studio. This time of the year, I love to paint the delicate tints that autumn gives the foliage. Cloud Arabesques, seen from Olana

Hello, art lovers and blog readers! I am a painter of the landscape in oil, and I live and paint in the mid-Hudson Valley of New York State. I have been revisiting Frederick Church's estate, Olana, overlooking the Hudson and each time I go there I fall in love with the view all over again. I am also in love with the art of master painter Church, and his art and that of other Hudson River School painters is a constant inspiration.

Hudson River Shallows, Morning

Hello, fellow art lovers and blog readers! It has been a while since I posted here but it's been a busy summer. Now that fall foliage color is emerging in the northeast I expect to be even busier in the next few weeks. I am Ellen Perantoni, a painter of the landscape in oil in a manner inspired by the Hudson River School and the Barbizon School. I live and paint in the mid-Hudson Valley of New York State, where the Hudson River School (the first uniquely American school of art) came into being in the 1800s. I paint many of the same beautiful scenes that inspired the masters of that era.
The painting at right, "Hudson River Shallows, Morning" was created on a morning in August when a soft pearl-like fog hovered on the banks of the Hudson. I was walking down the path along the shore to the Saugerties Lighthouse when the beauty of this scene captured my eye and I had to paint it. Sitting on a bench on the narrow strip of beach, I did. The Hudson River is an estuary, which means a tidal river into which the tides from the Atlantic ocean ebb and flow. At high tide, much of the reeds in the foreground are under water. Thus, the shoreline here is ever-changing.
The painting is on 8x10" stretched canvas, and is still drying in my studio. I will frame it in a wide traditional gold frame and it may be consigned to one fo the fine galleries that represent me. It will be priced in the $550. range. I will consider a payment plan/fair offer from a sincere collector.

Late Afternoon, Kaaterskill Clove

Hello, art lovers and log readers! I am Ellen Perantoni, painter of the landscape in oil in a manner inspired by the Hudson River School and the Barbizon (early impressionist) school. The work at right is entitled "Late Afternoon, Kaaterskill Clove". Clove is the Dutch term for a valley or ravine; this dramatic valley descends through the northern Catskill Mountains to join the Hudson.
This spot was painted by a number of the original Hudson River School painters, such as Sanford Gifford. I love the spot too, and decided to paint it as it appears at different times of day, and at different seasons. The difference light makes in the appearance of a landscape is an impressionist concept, which enriches my love of Hudson River School art.
I just sold this painting to a collector who visited my studio. I'm working on two more paintings of this view at different times of day: one view captures the very last light of day, when the sunlight is just a few blazing rose-gold lines on the horizon, and one view of the clove in early afternoon as the leaves are just beginning to change color in fall.

Landscape Painting Workshop October 5-7, 2009 with Ellen Perantoni

Hello, art lovers and blog readers! I am Ellen Perantoni, painter of the landscape in oil in a manner inspired by the Hudson River School and the Barbizon School. The image at right is one of my paintings sold at the recent Saugerties Art Tour this past weekend.
I will be conducting a fall color landscape workshop, teaching outdoors by my mid-Hudson Valley studio this fall from October 5-7. My studio is about a 2 hr. pleasant drive north of the NYC metro area and within a few hours of most points in eastern New York State, New England, NJ and eastern PA.
The workshop will start on the 11 acre mountainside property by the studio, then progress to other scenic spots in the nearby mid-Hudson region. Fall is spectacular here, and perfect for painting outdoors.
Each day the workshop will run from 9am-4pm. The fee is $325. and the group will be small, so I can give greater personal attention to each individual. The workshop is for all ages from age 17 up.

This is the weekend of the Saugerties Art Tour, in which I am participating by opening the summer studio where I create my oil paintings, inspired by the Hudson River School and the Barbizon School.
I am Ellen Perantoni, painter of the landscape in oil and I live and paint in this beautiful mid-Hudson region, in the picturesque township of Saugerties, which fronts on the Hudson River and extends up into the mountains. Night on the Inlet

Happy Summer to all! I am Ellen Perantoni, painter of the landscape in oil in a manner inspired by the Hudson River School painters and the work of George Inness. I live and paint in the Hudson Valley of New York State, surrounded by the same views and magical light that inspired the original nineteenth century masters in this uniquely American style. This blog consists of art images, art chat and purchase info.
The painting at right is entitled "Night on the Inlet". I love to paint the landscape at all hours and all seasons, and I'm intrigued by night and the enchanting possibilities night offers when the moon is full enough to create silvery glows in the sky and to frost the peaceful scenes below.
I am inspired by the John Herald song "Hats off the the Cajun Moon" and though the ponds and wetlands of the Catskills are well north of Cajun country, I think of the spell cast by this rapturous music and its delicate mandolin work when I paint such scenes of hushed waters and trees at night.
This work is 14x18" on stretched canvas, framed as shown in a complementary wood frame. The oil as framed is almost 20 by 24". This painting is priced $1150. as framed. I will consider a payment plan/fair offer from a sincere collector.

This is the view from the rear lawn of Frederick Church's famous estate "Olana" overlooking the upper Hudson. Master painter Church felt this view was the best in the world, and I can see his point. I have painted this view many times, in many sizes, by night and day, at all seasons and under spectacular skies.
My art can also be seen by appointment at my studio, about 2 hours north of the NYC metro area. It's a nice trip and a lovely area to visit at this time of year.

Much of my art these days is celebrating the Quadricentennial celebration of Henry Hudson's first voyage up the river that now bears his name, in 1609.
There is now a lighthouse on the river on a tiny island outside Saugerties in the mid Hudson Valley. To visit this picturesque lighthouse, you park about a half mile away and walk a path along the river that has beautiful views (and is sometimes under a few inches of water, when the tide comes in). The Hudson River is an estuary or tidal river; sometimes water flows into the Hudson from the Atlantic Ocean and sometimes it flows out again.
This view I have painted is of a pretty spot on the path, at low tide to show a bit of beach. It is entitled "Lighthouse Path on the Hudson" and is 8x10" on stretched canvas. This work was just sold from my studio, to the first collector who saw it.
I show my art by appointment in my studio and at selected galleries, as well as selling online. If you purchase my work from an Internet photo and you are not delighted with it you cn return it for a refund within 30 days.

Cliffsides by the Water

Hello, art lovers and blog readers! Don't know about where you are, but the first shoots of grass and the crocuses and daffodils are up in the Hudson Valley, where I live and paint. My art is inspired by nature, and nature here is magnificent. Much of the beauty captured by the nineteenth century masters of the Hudson River School is still intact, and this inspires me first and foremost. I am just finishing the oil at right, entitled "Cliffsides by the Water". It is 20x30" on stretched canvas, and in one of the traditional gold frames I generally use to frame my paintings it will be almost 30x40" on the wall.

Sailboats on Quiet River, and the Hudson Valley Quadricentennial

Hello, art lovers and blog readers.This is my second blog post in a week, a sign am being energized by the coming spring which is starting to evidence itself in crocuses blooming and delightful warm sunshine.
I paint the landscape in oil, in a manner inspired by the Hudson River school of painting and the slightly later Barbizon School.
I live and paint in the Hudson Valley, which this year is celebrating the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage up this river from what is now New York City. It seems strange to think our country is 400 years old, an age much predating the Declaration of Independence, but it is.
A major center of American civilization started right in this region with Hudson's historic voyage upriver.
Though I'm not familiar with the exact configuration of the ships of 1609, this painting was inspired by my concept of Henry Hudson and his companions on his voyage. Hudson River views in warm weather have a stately, dreamlike and very still feeling that seems timeless. One could sit on the banks and gaze and perhaps meditate for hours, losing track of time.
Even the clouds scarcely seem to move in this painting of ships that are sailing yet seem becalmed.
This work was recently sold by the Driftwood Gallery, 44 No. Division St., Peekskill, NY. The Driftwood has more of my art on exhibit and is open Wed. through Sat. 12-5; I suggest calling first at 914-788-4650.
One of my other Hudson Valley paintings was among 4 selected statewide for a multimedia performance celebrating the Quadricentennial, which toured the state last month.

Fields and Distant Light

The painting at right, "Fields and Distant Light" is a 20x30" oil on stretched canvas which is still drying in my studio. I plan to frame it in a massive traditional gold frame. Evergreens at Golf Course

Happy end-of-February, almost-spring to you art lovers and blog readers! I am Ellen Perantoni, painter of the Hudson Valley, and in my region this is a happy time for most of us. While I love to paint the magnificent winters in the Hudson Valley, I love painting and being outside even more when the leaves return to the trees and the landscape is a panoply of greens, broken by blue and silver rivers.

The painting at right is an 8x10" oil on canvas entitled "Trees at Golf Course". It was inspired by the pretty golf course at Woodstock, NY near my studio.
It is currently on exhibit at Green (Gallery), one of several fine art galleries that represent me. This work, in a traditional massive ornate gold frame, is priced $525. 2009-2010 Spring through Fall Hudson Valley Landscape Painting Classes:

Hello, art lovers and blog readers! I am Ellen Perantoni, painter of the landscape in oil in a manner inspired by the Hudson River School and Barbizon School.
I usually post on this blog about recently finished paintings, but this post is in response to requests I get to conduct landscape classes and workshops.
My studio is near Woodstock in the mid-Hudson Valley, at the very heart of Hudson River School country, and I usually conduct a class and two workshops each May-October season. Private lessons to fit your schedule can also be arranged. I usually paint outside from May-October, sometimes on location (en plein air) and sometimes on the 11-acre property by the studio, in the foothills of the Catskill mountains on the west bank of the river.
If you want to learn to paint in my style, I would love to have you in my class or workshops.
This area is delightful to visit and many people make a weekend or a holiday of it. I have info on the area motels, campgrounds, and bed and breakfasts.
I'm located about 2 hours north of the NYC metro area, 4 hrs. from Boston, and 1 hr. from Albany. Within a half hour of many of the sites memorialized by Church, Cole and others 19th century masters of the Hudson River School.

I am now organizing a 3-day fall color workshop for October 5-7, 2009. It will focus on plein air painting at the peak of the local fall foliage season in these mountains and will be very exciting.
My painting at right is entitled "Lowlands in the Valley" and it is currently on exhibit at Berkshire Art Gallery, 80 Railroad St., Great Barrington, Mass. This gallery is open weekends from 12-5 in the winter.

Glory in the Evening, Upper Hudson Valley

The work at right is a panorama of a bend in the Hudson as seen from the rear lawn of Olana, Frederick Church's home above the east bank of the upper Hudson Valley. This is one of my favorite scenes to paint, and it is always wonderful and always different.
This work is 20x30" on stretched canvas, with the varnish still drying. Framed in a museum quality gold frame, it will probably retail around $2800. in one of the fine art galleries that represent me.
At present, I will sell it from my studio, and will consider a payment plan/fair offer from a sincere collector.

Blue Mountain Panorama

I live and paint in the Hudson Valley of New York State, where I am fortunate to be in the midst of constant inspiration for my works. The view in the painting at right, "Blue Mountain Panorama", is an actual view from one of the mountain roads near my home in the Catskill Mountain foothills east of the Hudson. For a memorable couple of weeks in the fall, the foliage flames into gorgeous colors and I was able to capture this view on canvas. There is a former farm in the foreground which has turned into meadow, with forest and the silhouette of Round Top Mountain in the distance.
This work is on 6x12" stretched canvas. The first photo shows some detail, and at this close-up range I could not prevent a bit of glare from the glossy varnish. The actual painting is not glare-y; the varnish brings out the pretty detail and depth of the work.
This work is being placed with a collector by Green, a fine Saugerties, NY gallery which represents my work. Green has more of my art on exhibit. For further info on Green please contact me.
I also show my art in my studio by appointment. I'm about 2 hours north of the NYC metro area, 1 hr. from Albany and 4 hrs. from the Boston area.

Kaaterskill Below Bastion Falls

I was so pleased at having found the right frame to set off this painting, that I photographed the painting framed for this blog. Painting as I do, I often find the right frame really makes a painting "more than the sum of its parts".
This work is entitled "Kaaterskill Below Bastion Falls" and it shows a fabulous spot in the "Kaaterskill Clove" below Haines Falls in the Catskill Mountains, west of the Hudson. As you can see the stream has cut a deep gorge here, affording a dramatic view upstream. I was able to climb down from what is now NY State Rt. 23A to the rocks by the stream for this painting.
Believe me--this digital photo of the framed painting does not even begin to show all the fine detail of the foliage, the tumbled rocks and the foaming water. I strove for realism here, and put in many loving hours on the details.
It is on stretched canvas 18x24", and in the museum quality frame it's over 26x32" on the wall. It will probably eventually be consigned to one of my galleries where it will be priced in the $2600. range. I will consider a payment plan or fair offer from a sincere collector.

This work is entitle "Sailboats above Peekskill". Peekskill is a venerable riverfront town on the east bank of the Hudson, about 40 minutes north of New York City. Highway 6 climbs a dramatic bluestone formation overlooking the river and this picturesque bend. On pleasant days sailboating on the river is a delight, and regattas are a regular pastime. The river often looks much as it did in the 1850s, when the Hudson River School of painting was in its heyday.
This painting is on 24x36" stretched canvas. Right now it's in my studio and can be purchased from this blog or viewed by appointment. My studio is a pleasant 2 hour drive north of New York City, 1 hour from Albany and 4 hours from Boston. This work is priced at $3300. and I will consider a payment plan/fair offer from a sincere collector.

This interestingly shaped small painting is one of my recent works, approximately 9x7-1/2 inches not including the frame. Framed, it's about 9x11-1/2 inches on the wall. I painted it on artist's canvas board.

It Was A Great Studio Tour Weekend:

Hi, this is Ellen Perantoni, a landscape painter in oil inspired by the Hudson River School and the Barbizon School. I live and paint in the riverfront/mountain town of Saugerties. It's on the west bank of the Hudson, in the foothills of the fabled Catskill Mountains. And that is where I just had a wonderful weekend. Here's a pic of a young family viewing one of my paintings on the deck (it was a fabulous day for this occasion.
I want to thank everyone who came and made the weekend such a fun occasion and such a success. The visitors from places hours away, the neighbors I met for the first time, and returning collectors who have become friends.
My studio tour and sale was part of a townwide event, the 6th annual Saugerties Artists Tour consisting of 24 artist studios open to the public throughout the Town of Saugerties.
A good time was had by all and the weather was fine except for a brief shower Saturday.

Esopus Creek Image and Artists' Studio Tour August 16-17:

Hello, art lovers and log readers! I'm Ellen Perantoni, painter of the landscape in oil in a manner inspired by the Hudson River School. I live and paint in the mid-Hudson Valley where this wonderful way of immortalizing nature began in the 1800s. The work at right is just finished, barely dry, and will be featured among others at my studio tour and sale August 16-17.
I've discussed the upcoming weekend-long studio tour in other posts on this blog, including the preceding. The trip to our Catskill-foothills community is a delightful summertime excursion from the NYC metro area, Boston, Albany and other points in the northeast.

The painting at right is an oil on stretched canvas, 16x20". The Esopus Creek is a famous trout stream that makes its scenic way down from the northwestern Catskills to join the Hudson River at the village of Saugerties, NY. That is Exit 20 of the New York State Thruway.

This scene, Rosy Sky Tapestry, was sold on SAT studio tour weekend, Augus 16-17.
The stretched canvas is 8x10" and in its museum quality carved wood frame it's about 14x16" on the wall. It depicts a rosy sunset over one of the spectacular bends in the Hudson River, in the fall when foliage colors add to the tapestry. I believe it has drama--will the motion of the cloud masses lead to a storm or to a clearing up as the sun sinks? I find such drama inherent in the sometimes-misty atmosphere of the Hudson Valley, fed by evaporation from this legendary river.

Cabin in the Red Mountains

The painting at right, because it was inspired by the view from a mountain house we stayed at in Arizona, is a bit of a departure from my usual Hudson Valley views. Only, though, in the color of the red sandstone cliffs behind the cabin, which seems exotic to easterners like myself.
We took the cabin partly for the views, and I guess you can see why. The painting is on 12x16" stretched canvas, and in fact it is still drying. But I couldn't wait to post it here. I have a museum quality simple but elegant frame for it and if I don't sell it first it will eventually be consigned to one of my galleries where the price will be in the $900. range.

Two Rivers Meet

Hello, art lovers and blog readers! I'm Ellen Perantoni, painter of the landscape in oil in a manner inspired by the Hudson River School and the Barbizon School. This painting at right, "Two Rivers Meet", owes a certain homage to George Inness and the transcendent light effects of British painter JMW Turner.
I live and paint in the Hudson Valley of New York State, among the scenery immortalized in the original Hudson River School works of the nineteenth century. Happily, there is a great deal that has not changed much.

This painting is inspired by the timeless, graceful expansiveness of the gentle hills of the New England area, and the sunsets created for memorable moments in time by the changing clouds over the region. Very soon a gentle cover of darkness will descend, but sunsets alike this are not soon forgotten by those who love this land.
Paintings are like people; some are more photogenic than others. In this case, photography does not do justice to the depth and fire of this work. But I love it, and I think anyone who sees the actual painting would agree with me, so I wanted to put the photo in my blog anyway. If you like the photo, you should be enraptured by the painting!
The painting is executed on 18x24" stretched canvas. It is now in my studio, awaiting its final coat of varnish. Subject to prior sale, it may be in my August 16-17 studio tour and sale. This will be part of the town wide 24-studio tour described and illustrated on www.saugertiesarttour.com

Hello, art lovers and blog readers! I'm Ellen Perantoni, and I paint the landscape in oil in a manner influenced by the Hudson River School masters of the 19th century, also the slightly later Barbizon School.
I live and paint in the Hudson Valley of New York State, amid the same beauty that inspired those immortals to take brush and paint and fix that beauty on canvas forever. On August 16-17 I am having an open studio tour for friends, collectors and those interested in the art. I hope many of you readers are in all three categories...

Many works that will be at my studio are not shown in galleries anywhere. Some are framed and some not, and you can choose your own framing in some cases if you like.

The painting shown at right is a recently finished oil on canvas, as framed. I am enjoying doing more night scenes of the Hudson Valley region. Nights here are so emotive, dreamy and beautiful.

This newest work "Lowland Night" was sold by Berkshire Art Gallery, 80 Railroad St., Great Barrington, Mass. and I have more paintings on exhibit there. The gallery phone is 413-528-2690. I've been working on this painting for a very long time. I wanted the glowing quality of the light to be just right. I found the ca. 1900 antique frame it is pictured in, also.

Lowlands in the Valley

Hello. art lovers and blog readers! Spring is approaching softly and gradually here in the Hudson Valley, and my thoughts are turning to quiet mellow scenes like this one, with vegetation softening the contours of the land and foliage silhouetted against the sky.

The painting at right is an oil on 14x18" stretched canvas, of lowlands along the n shore of the Hudson. The river is not far away, and in spring a network of small streams runs across the land and the views are gentle and peaceful on hazy days like this one. The light indicates it is late in the day and the foliage forms are softly gilded.
The price of this work is $1200. handsomely framed in a traditional manner.

2007 was a significant year for me. In 2007 one of my works was acquired for the permanent collection of Whistler House Museum of Art, joining works by J. McNeil Whistler and J. Singer Sargent among others. I also became listed in AskArt, a standard reference list of respected artists containing many living as well as deceased artists.
The painting at right is entitled "Catskill Creek, October" and is shown in its museum quality heavy carved frame. This peaceful autumn view is 5x7" on artist canvas board, and its framed size on the wall is a little over 12x14". The gold glints in the frame finish further enliven the foliage color, and the painting is more detailed than can be shown in this digital photo image.
This work is at Berkshire Art Gallery, 80 Railroad St., Great Barrington, Mass. The gallery is open weekends from 12-5 and possibly during the week after Memorial Day. Before going there on a weekday it's best to call 413-528-2690. This work is priced at $325.

The painting in the above image is entitled "Ten O'Clock at the Pond" and is a Hudson Valley scene viewed on a tranquil night in midsummer. A most dreamlike and unutterably peaceful image. It is executed on 11x14" stretched canvas, and is framed in a massive traditional gold museum quality frame.
This painting image was selected for projection on screen screen during a multi-media performance celebrating the Hudson Valley Quadricentennial. This celebration began with a performance in Albany, NY and future performances will be in Peekskill, NYC, Oswego and Lake Placid.
The original of this work has been sold to a collector.
My studio is about 2 hours north of the NYC metro area, in a forest on a mountainside in the northern Catskills, and other paintings can bee viewed there by appointment.

The painting at right is entitled "Rocky Hillside" and was inspired by the High Peaks region of the northern Catskill mountains, of Rip Van Winkle fame. The magnificent rock formations and murmuring streams of this region are wonderful, as is the dramatically changeable light.

This painting is on 12x16" canvas, and in an ornate traditional style gold frame it is priced $875. The framed size on the wall is about 20x24". Tappan Zee Bridge in Mist

The view in the painting above is the famous Tappan Zee Bridge that spans the Hudson River at its widest, just north of New York City. It is the view from Mathiessen Park in Irvington-on-Hudson. If you were to look the other way from this park you could see the New York Skyline. These landmarks are often romantically semi-obscured by the delicate haze over the river, generating the atmospheric effects for which Hudson River School art is known.

This oil on canvas is 18x24" and I plan to frame it in a museum quality traditional gold frame of harmonious design.

This painting will be on exhibit at my Open Studio Sale August 16-17 from 10am-5pm. The studio is between Woodstock and Saugerties along the west bank of the Hudson. At this season of the year it is an especially delightful drive, about 2-1/2 hours from the NY metro area, one hour from Albany, and about 4 hours from the Boston area and eastern New England.

It is a rural studio on a forested mountainside, adding I believe a further atmosphere of peace and seclusion to my work. If you would like to drop in during the open studio please e-mail me and I will send you a map and/or directions.

If this painting is not sold at the studio sale I will probably consign it to one of several fine galleries that represent me. My gallery addresses and contact info are given in other blog posts, so I hope you will read them if you like to view art at galleries.

The painting above is entitled "The Patriarch (Red Maple)" and is a 16x20" oil on canvas on view at Arlington Art Gallery, 32 Raymond Ave. Poughkeepsie, NY. Poughkeepsie is a venerable Hudson River town and the gallery is open 7 days a week for those who like to view art in a gallery setting. This painting is one of my most recently finished and is framed in a museum quality traditional gold frame that brings its size on the wall to over 24x28". As framed it is priced $1600. This view and its mellow colors was inspired by the works of Jasper Cropsey, whose autumn views of the Hudson River and environs set a standard of beauty for future generations. Like many of Cropsey's works, this painting was meant to capture a moment in time and usher the viewer into the physical and inner repose of contemplation.

The painting above, "Tranquil Evening" is a panorama of a bend in the Hudson River through the delightful hazy light that has helped make the region's art memorable. Filtered through this gentle atmosphere, the rays of sunset create a glow that make the proverbial rose colored glasses unnecessary.

This painting is a 12x16" oil on canvas that I've framed in a handsome wide but simple antique gold frame that brings its size to over 20x24" on the wall. The painting above is entitled "Red Trees Below Olana" and is currently on exhibit at The Driftwood Gallery in Peekskill, NY, a charming riverfront city on the east bank of the Hudson. The actual painting is sharper than this digital image--digital photography is not adequate to capture the detail and depth of my paintings, which are done in a series of delicate glazes. The painting above is entitled "Corona Above the River", a view across the Hudson from the east bank looking west. It is inspired by the rolling land that slopes gently to the river above Rhinebeck. The colors of the actual painting are stronger and more rosy than the photo appears on my monitor. Yes, as you might guess the Museum was once the home of master painter James McNeill Whistler. Today it is a museum and in addition to work by Whistler the Museum has art by John Singer Sargent, William Morris Hunt, Aldro Thompson Hibbard and William McGregor Paxton among others.
So as you can imagine I am honored that my work is in such illustrious company.

Oil Paintings, Limited Edition Prints on Paper and Canvas

Hello. I am Ellen Perantoni and I paint the landscape in oil, in a realistic/atmospheric style inspired by the Hudson River School and the Impressionists. I paint only in oil, but in addition to my original oils I sell limited edition signed prints of some of my most popular works. These limited editions start at $35. for prints on paper, or start at $95. for prints on canvas. The prints on canvas can be displayed without a glass covering, just like my original oils.

The print above is of my painting "Hudson Valley from Olana, October". The original painting was sold by the former River Gallery of Irvington, NY for $2000. The detail in the foliage is more clear in the actual print and the sky colors are more vibrant.

This print on heavy archival paper stock is in a handsome double mat which will fit into a standard 11x14 inch frame. This print is #160 of a limited edition of 250. Its cost is $40.00 plus $5.00 shipping and insurance.

This is the only double mat I have in these colors, so once this print is gone I probably won't be able to get this mat color combination again. Do you need a larger size, or perhaps a set of prints? Just let me know what you like, after browsing through my other art images. I have other prints made up of paintings that sold in the past and are not in my online database. I can e-mail you images of other prints that are already made up, matted and unmatted.

I live in the Hudson Valley, among the same beautiful vistas that inspired the nineteenth-century painters who began the first truly American visual art form.

The painting above is "Meadow Panorama with Sheep" and it's 20x30", oil on stretched canvas. The varnish has just dried, and it has never been exhibited. It's one of those sweeping views of a hazy summer afternoon in the Hudson Valley, the kind of views beloved by old Hudson River School painters like Thomas Doughty and others. Perhaps it could be called an example of Luminism.

I also paint "View Portraits" (a term I have copyrighted) on commission. I can paint your favorite view at your favorite time of day and time of year. I love to do sunsets and sunrises.

"Meadow Panorama with Sheep" will probably be eventually consigned to one of my galleries in the $2600. price range, but I would be pleased to sell it from my studio. Right now, there is a one-person exhibit of my recent art at Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, Mass., including the painting at right. "Browsing by the River" is 8x10 inches, painted on stretched canvas and framed in a museum quality ornate traditional gold frame. Framed size on the wall is about 14x16 inches. I've been selling my art mostly in gallery, art show and museum settings and would like to reach out to directly to more art lovers and collectors. I posted images of a few of my paintings yesterday and the day before. I'd like this post to be even more interactive, to tell you more about my art and maybe find out your views on art appreciation, browsing and collecting.

Browsing art online is fun and collecting online is easy, but many people would still rather see the actual art work and I can understand this. I understand because no matter how hard the photographer tries, a digital photo of an oil painting that has depth, detail and "quality" can't compare to the beauty of the real thing.

So, when anyone buys an oil painting from me that they have only seen online, they can return it for a full refund if they are not delighted when they see it. If you purchase a painting from this blog, you may return it for any reason for a full refund as long as I get it back within 30 days, in the same good condition I sent it.

The Ravine in Autumn

This is an autumn view of one of the more spectacular ravines or deep valleys in the Hudson valley where I live and paint. The old Dutch name for such a ravine is "clove" and that is how they are locally known to this day.

This painting is on 5x7 inch artist canvas board. It has been sold to a collector.But I always have more paintings. I accept PayPal, certified funds and personal checks on USA-based banks.

The Valley Floor

This is my latest large painting, not even varnished yet. I call it The Valley Floor, and though I live in the Hudson Valley and am inspired by Hudson River School painters, this work developed more along the lines of a Thomas Moran painting of the American west. It has the reddish ocher tones, carved valleys and above all a feeling of great expansiveness, as if you are viewing many miles into the distance. You can almost hear the wind whispering as it feathers the clouds across a distant mountain range.

This painting is on stretched canvas, 24 by 36 inches. Like many of my paintings it will eventually be probably consigned to one of the galleries that represent my work. It will then be priced in the $3300. range.

I would be pleased to sell it out of my studio, though, and will consider a reasonable offer and/or arrange a payment plan for a sincere collector of fine art. I accept PayPal, certified funds and personal checks drawn on USA banks.

A Bit of History About Me:

Hello. I'm Ellen Perantoni, and I am happy to have found my true vocation as a painter of the mystical and transcendent in nature. I live in the mid-Hudson Valley of New York State. My reverence for the natural world continues the tradition, I believe, of the Hudson River School of Art.
The Hudson River School was the first uniquely American school of art.
It was the first genre, anywhere, to glorify nature in its unaltered state. Previously most art collectors and aficionados felt a subject worthy of painting had to be a person, historical event, or man-made structure of some kind.
In Hudson River School art buildings, people, and even animals are generally shown as relatively small objects in a wider landscape.
Nature, in Hudson River School art, is generally conveyed as benevolent and self-renewing. Even storms are cleansing rather than destructive.
I live and paint in a forest on the lower slopes of Mount Overlook between Woodstock and Saugerties, NY, on the west side of the Hudson. I like to think the sheltering glen where Rip Van Winkle became so relaxed he slept for 20 years is not far away.
I often paint en plein air (outdoors, on site) for authenticity and vigor in my work, and not incidentally for the fresh air and sunshine.
Often the fleeting and spectacular light effects of sunsets cannot be captured in oil in a few minutes, but I do my best to capture these brief miracles and have many such sunsets happily emblazoned in memory.

Lowlands by the Mountains

This is one of my favorite larger paintings (though it's hard to choose favorites at any time!) and now, on March 7, 2007 it is being exhibited in a show at the Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, Mass.

Yes, Whistler House is the former residence of James McNeill Whistler and is now an art museum, with emphasis on the traditional in art.

This painting is 20x30 inches, on stretched canvas and is being exhibited in a museum quality wide but simple gold frame that brings the size on the wall to about 28x38 inches. As of this moment, the painting has not been sold and can be purchased from the Museum for $2800.

It will be at the Museum through April 14, 2007.
